The pearl starts with a John Steinbeck’s introduction. He wrote what he thought about his writing. For example, he said “if this book is parable…” he wrote this as a parable, but also as a short story. He wants us to learn many thing and don’t want people to learn just one thing in this story. Story has 3 main characters, fisherman Kino, his wife Juana, and their baby Coyotito. They lived happy life even though there was no money. However, one day Coyotito stung by scorpion. There was no way that he can do to his baby, so he went to doctor. Unfortunately, doctor was too greedy to cure his son. Fortunately, Coyotito survived and Kino found a big pearl which is too big for him to sell in cheap price. He tried to sell his pearl as expensive as he can and it caused him to travel to other city and there was thief and Kino killed him. Kino decided to leave town and trackers followed after him. He hid in cave and tracker accidently shot Coyotito so he died. Kino frustrated too much so he went back to town, and then threw Pearl away. When I read this book, Pearl seemed evil, and it was. However, when I related to this world, pearl was not evil. Pearl changed Kino, and Kino was the one who decided to be changed. There were many different choices and Kino became greedy every single time when he decided to keep pearl. He couldn’t keep pearl properly, and it causes him losing his son and reason to be rich. He wanted his son, Coyotito, to be rich and Coyotito died. I think John Steinbeck wanted to say was wealth is not happiness, and they lose many things if you get rich. Money may give small happiness, but it is too small to substitute everything that people have lost. When you realize it, you lost everything except money. I think this book is short but have lots of meaning. It is true parable which gives lots of meaning, if you see in different perspective.
